Blue Man Group

Head of Makeup and Costumes: Blue Man Group

From 2007 to 2016 I had the pleasure of working on several projects in a variety of roles. Below are a few of my favorites.

    Wearable Video Suits

Role: Design and Fabrication Team Member

This costume was the most labor intensive and satisfying piece that I've worked on to date. Blue Man Group has always pushed the envelope with wearable technologies.

The costume that housed the video elements needed to carry and protect the programmable video equipment--resistant to moisture and paint, while allowing the video to be highly visual. Additionally, it would be a quickchange costume, needed light enough, and comfortable enough to wear while playing instruments.

Constructed at The Blue Lab with visual artist Zea Barker as lead designer.

    Icon Man

Role: Design and Fabrication Team Member

As part of their first concert tour, Blue Man Group created a black and white segmented “Icon Person” to use as a video element. Traditionally it is animated by a character animator in 3D, but for an upcoming investor workshop the team wanted to try out a new piece at a lower expense. We decided to to construct a costume.

A performer was dressed in a black body suit with the white segments attached to his limbs, then filmed performing dance moves in front of a black background. Using a Luma Key in post, the black elements were replaced with video. The test was successful and the piece was eventually performed for audiences in Brazil.

        Band Costume Redesign

        Role: Project Manager

Blue Man Group envisioned its third show in Las Vegas as a remarkable new interactive project. The redesigned Band costumes were a part of this new vision, bringing in a new parade element to the pre-show.

As the project manager I worked as a liaison between the Producers, Designers, and Manufacturers to bring this new vision to life. Full of challenges, this project required tenacious problem solving and was eventually perfected and integrated company-wide.
